The Alabama Hiking Trail Society
I borrowed this log book from the Flagg Mountain old ranger cabin and Nimblewill Nomad, Curator. This 8¾" x 5½" wirebound book has black cardboard covers and no external text. There are no loose pages. I believe this book was mostly posted at the Flagg Mountain Trail System Trailhead at a crook on the ascending access road towards Flagg Mountain. This is not the current Pinhoti Trail but is on alternative road walks reasonable for long distance hikers past and future. Where no trail was specified, I categorized hikers as being on the Flagg Mountain Trails. But where clues direct or vague indicated, I listed the hikers as being on the Pinhoti, Great Eastern, Eastern Continental trails, etcetera. I left out a 10 item to do list after 2016 that seems to have nothing to do with trails or hiking. But it might indicate the book spent time in someone's house. After the list the dates jump back to 2013 and then are in order but separately from those in the front of the book. I sorted all out of sequence entries into chronological order, and exercized some editorial license to make this readable. There was little water damage but some illegible words in this book.

Graet Hike! Trail looks good and the hard work to construct the trail is greatly appreciated. Will the trail continue to the lookout tower atop Flagg Mountain? No! Wildlife spotted: 2 red tailed hawks, 2 fence lizards. Go Hokies!
Just a suggestion. Post the universal hiking trail symbol (Guy with a hiking stick) at trailhead. I didn't realize it was a hiking trail until I got out and read the sign which is hard to read from the road. Thanks!

Map needs to be updated - glad to have Alabama guide to hiking so we could see tower. Renovated cabins a little creepy - looks like someone is living there.
Wish we could have gotten in the tower but we really enjoyed the view anyway.

Hiked Yellow Trail to within sight of fire tower; wanted to get to abandoned cabins but trail kept redirecting and was blocked; would be helpful if there was a note that said the trails to the cabins were blocked so we could choose a trail; please remove snags for felled trees - could be dangerous; still enjoyed hike; solitude was beautiful and trail was full of adventure and appropriately called challenging; will definately come again; thank you for all your hard work! Very Much Appreciated!

Went to tower via unmarked but well established trail from abandoned cabins. Returned on the CCC camp road. Very pleasant hike and good to smell the pine and enjoy the silence of the forest again.

Beautiful new trail. Thank you for all the work John Calhoun and friends.
Needles had hiked the Florida Trail this year with Chuck Norris's van supported dozen. I hiked with them in the westbound or panhandle section. Today John and I picked up Needles at the airport and took him to Flagg Mountain to continue his hike on the Eastern Continental Trail. For a while he would be van supported by the legend Gordon Smith. Needles had diabetes and passed out along an Alabama road at some point. On the 23rd, John, Needles, and I walked up Rebecca Mountain. The story of the Pinhoti as an important link in the interstate hiking trail system would be better told if we track down the stories of the hikers who integrated it into a many-state hike.

From AHTS. Put new map in kiosk. This trail includes a north and a south trailhead which extended the yellow trail. The new section of the Pinhoti Trail is about 2 miles south of this trail. This trail does not link to the Pinhoti. This trail also does not include a hike to the tower or old cabins at this time. Thank you for hiking in Coosa County. Hope you come back soon.
